Helena is the capital of Montana because of its central (and scenic) location. Not far from the impressive capital building is the Last Chance Gulch walking mall, with shops and restaurants, along with historic plaques describing some of the local mining history. Just outside Helena is the Gates of the Mountains, a popular boat tour destination on Holter Lake (which is technically a dammed section of the Missouri River). Its high rock walls provided an unforgettable backdrop for the Lewis & Clark Expedition's initial explorations into the foothills of the Rockies.
