Littleton was established during the "Pikes Peak" gold rush of 1859. Along with the would-be miners came merchants and farmers to provide necessary services to Denver’s fast-growing population. Denver (or Denver City as it was called at the time) badly needed water, so a series of ditches was planned to move water there and its surrounding communities. Engineers were hired to develop the ditch system, one of whom was Richard Sullivan Little, a native of New Hampshire. Little grew to like the area so much he decided to settle there, and filed a plat map in 1872 which established the town. Today Littleton is supported by both agriculture and more recently a growing trend toward aerospace and the high-tech sector. Currently the population is about 35,000.
