Pendleton - Buffalo Creation Story Blanket

Pendleton Legendary Collection blankets are inspired by Native American art, legends, beliefs, ceremonies, and heroes. The Buffalo Creation Story was inspired by Andrew Hobson's painting of the Buffalo-Who-Never-Dies of the White Buffalo Tribe. In this tale, Buffalo became angry with Holy Man for having two buffalo women as his wives. Holy Man killed the angry buffalo with magic arrows and wands. But to his dismay, all the buffalos began to die. Then sad, Holy Man brought the buffalo back to life and showed him how to revive all the other buffalo. The central figure in this blanket shows the angry buffalo fractured in pieces to symbolize his death and journey back to life. Four buffalo tribes are shown inside protective medicine hoops, and the four sacred mountain ranges of the Navajo surround the central buffalo.

Pendleton - Thunder and Earthquake Blanket

$249.00

The beautiful design of this Pendleton blanket references a legend of the Yurok people, the original people of Northern California along the Klamath River. In the beginning there was no ocean, just a prairie. Then Thunder and Earthquake agreed that the people would have a better life if they had an ocean. So Earthquake traveled with Kingfisher to faraway Opis to bring back the water in abalone shells. As they went, Earthquake sank the land at the north end of the world behind them. At the south end of the world, Thunder helped by breaking down trees. Soon the water extended all the way from the north to the south end of the world. This new stretch of water provided them with salmon and seals. This intricate blanket pattern incorporates repeated triangular and zigzag designs often seen in Yurok basketry, while the ombred effect emulates the mighty shaking of Earthquake.
