Homesteaders on the Oregon Trail used the nearby prominent bluffs, named after settler Hiram Scott, as a marker on their journey West. Rising abruptly from the flat Nebraska plains, the bluffs form a sudden and striking landmark along the North Platte River. The town of Scottsbluff adjoins with Gering, the county seat, and sits only 20 miles from the Wyoming border. With nearly 15,000 people, Scottsbluff is the largest city in the western Nebraska Panhandle Region. Railroad industry and agriculture still thrive in this late 19th Century town.
