Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply’s (“Murdoch’s”) routing guide does not select the carrier or shipping mode (small parcel, LTL, or FTL) when Murdoch’s is not responsible for shipping charges, however it does contain instructions and explanations to prevent noncompliant shipments and possible chargebacks. All vendors must read the Murdoch’s Vendor Routing Guide. These routing instructions apply to all Murdoch’s locations and all orders.
This Routing Guide, effective 2/15/19, supersedes all previous routing instructions dated prior to 2018. By supplying any product to Murdoch’s, you acknowledge and agree that you will comply with these routing instructions. Written authorization from Murdoch’s Logistics Department is required to deviate from these routing instructions.
The instructions in this routing guide are an integral part of your agreement with Murdoch’s. Deviation from these instructions without approval of the Murdoch’s Logistics Department may result in chargebacks, administrative cost, and processing fees, which will be deducted from your invoice.
All purchase orders (PO’s) issued by Murdoch’s will reference this guide and this page's hyperlink will be given to all vendors for instant access. By shipping a PO to Murdoch’s, you are agreeing to Murdoch’s shipping requirements and/or chargebacks.
Consider this document as a new set of instructions. Distribute this to all personnel within your organization who are responsible for any logistical compliance. Previously authorized variances from Murdoch’s routing are rescinded, effective immediately.
Mode Selection - Quick Reference
Whenever Murdoch’s is responsible for freight charges, please use the following questions to choose the correct shipping mode. In addition to the actual weight, the dimensional (UPS billable) weight must be determined. When determining Murdoch’s UPS dimensional weight (click here for dimensional weight explanation), use 194 as the divisor, instead of the UPS published 139.
The principle modes of transportation covered herein are: Small Parcel (UPS Ground), Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), and Truckload (TL).
The flow chart below may serve as a quick shipping reference:
*Schneider Logistics: Contact info and web portal details located here.
**UPS: To assure the shipment is within Murdoch’s/UPS weight and size limits please read more here.
Note: Please contact Murdoch’s Logistics Manager Chris Long at (406) 556-6363 or email@example.com with any questions on how to select Murdoch’s best shipping mode, concerns regarding shipping product with small package ground service, high proclivity for damage items, large number of small cartons, or any other questions. In some cases, alternate routing may be arranged.
Please consolidate all PO’s shipping to the same address.
If your warehouse ships numerous small package shipments to Murdoch’s each day or week, please contact Chris Long firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be glad to help you review your shipping process to ensure correct interpretation of the Murdoch’s Vendor Routing Guide.
Bill of Lading (BOL)
Provide itemized details for your shipment on the Bill of Lading. Indicate the purchase order number(s), the number of cartons associated with each purchase order, and the total number of cartons.Murdoch’s PO number is required on all BOL’s. The PO helps identify shipments with the respective vendor in our system. Sometimes our vendor’s company name doesn’t match the shipper name or a 3rd party provider is listed as the shipper. LTL shipments require product description, weight, carton count, LTL Class, and NMFC number.
Packing List Requirements
- Each PO must have its own packing list
- The packing list must be placed in a clearly marked package indicating 'Packing List Enclosed'
- The packing list must contain the following information:
- Murdoch's PO number
- Vendor name and address
- Vendor order number
- Total number of cartons and weight of shipment
- A separate packing list shall be provided for each PO on multiple shipments
Small Parcel Shipment
United Parcel Service’s (UPS) is Murdoch’s small package carrier. Reference the flow chart here to determine shipment type.
All small parcel shipments must ship via ground UPS unless prior written authorization was given by a Murdoch's employee.
To determine the UPS billable weight, you need to compare the package’s actual weight to its dimensional weight. The greater of the two is the billable weight and should be used when determining the best shipment mode.
When Murdoch’s is responsible for the freight charges, all packages shipping to a Murdoch’s facility must be marked as:
- Murdoch's UPS account number 95VY60
- Provide each cartons dimensions
- Do not use the individual store's UPS account number unless directed by Murdoch's to do so
- "Bill the Receiver" (Collect) or "Third Party"
- All packages must have the Murdoch’s PO number entered in the UPS ‘Reference 1’ field of the shipping system and appear on the shipping label
- Do not exceed any UPS established specific weight and size limits for packages (without written authorization from Murdoch’s Logistics)
- Single package maximum weight is 150 lbs
- Packages cannot exceed 108 inches in length
- Packages may be up to 130 inches (330 cm) in length and girth combined (Click here for girth calculations and notes on Dimensional weight)
For hazardous shipments, refer to the UPS Guide for Shipping Ground and Air Hazardous Materials at: https://www.ups.com/us/en/help-center/packaging-and-supplies/special-care-shipments/hazardous-materials.page
Refer to https://www.ups.com/us/en/Home.page?, Phone: (800) 742-5877 or (800) PICK-UPS for any additional UPS shipping information.
Do not declare value or select any other UPS value-added services without Murdoch’s written authorization. Please click here for a list of assessorial fees that will be charged back to the vendor.
For high value packages (individual carton value over $1,000), contact Murdoch’s Logistics Department for special routing instructions.

New Requirements for 2019: When entering shipment data, the packages correct dimensions must be provided. Failure to provide the correct package dimensions could trigger a UPS Audit Fee and lead to vendor chargeback.
Less-than-truckload (LTL) routing applies to shipments weighing between 301 – 19,999 lbs, which occupy no more than 16 linear feet of trailer space.
When shipping LTL, always provide the actual physical weight of the shipment including pallet weight.
Schneider Logistics is Murdoch’s LTL 3PL of choice and must be used when shipping LTL shipments.
Caitlin Zondor is the Murdoch’s representative for Schneider and can assist you when booking LTL shipments to Murdoch’s. Please, email her all the details of the shipment to email@example.com and she will email you the BOL to give to the driver. If you have any questions, you can reach her by phone at (312)781-8809.
Details needed to book an LTL are:
- Pick up address
- Delivery address
- Pallet count
- Carton count
- Freight description
- Freight class
- NMFC code
- Shipping hours
If you are not sure of the LTL class or NMFC, please contact Caitlin for assistance.
Full truckload (TL) routing applies to shipments weighing more than 19,999 pounds, and/or occupying greater than (16) linear feet of trailer space. Please contact Murdoch’s Logistics Manager Chris Long for Full Truckload shipments: firstname.lastname@example.org (406) 556-6363.

Girth refers to the distance around an object and is used in shipping to determine how much it will cost to ship a package.
To measure ground packages, use the following formula: Length + 2x Width + 2x Height
- Determining Length
- Measure the longest side of the package, rounding to the nearest inch, this is your length.
- Determining Girth (2x Width + 2x Height)
- Measure the width of the package, rounding to the nearest inch, multiply this number by 2
- Measure the height of the package, rounding to the nearest inch, multiply this number by 2
- Add these two numbers together, this is your girth
- Add the length and the girth together. This is your package measurement.
NOTE: For each dimension, measure at the longest point, rounding each measurement to the nearest whole number (for example, 1.00 to 1.49 will be considered 1, and 1.50 to 1.99 will be considered 2).
Determining Dimensional (DIM) Weight
Determine the package dimensions in whole inches. For each dimension, measure at the longest point, rounding each measurement to the nearest whole number (for example, 1.00 to 1.49 will be considered 1, and 1.50 to 1.99 will be considered 2).
Multiply the package length by the width by the height. The result is the cubic size in inches. (L x W x H)
For Murdoch’s shipments, divide the cubic size in inches by 194 to determine the dimensional weight. Keep in mind that Murdoch’s 194 divisor is different than the published standard UPS divisor.
Round any fractional weight up to the next whole pound as this is a UPS standard (for example, 1.01 lbs will be considered 2 lbs).
