When did the ownership change take place?
On January 7, 2019, the transaction between Big R (Powell and Riverton) and Murdoch’s was finalized. The Linton’s and their stores are icons in the farm and ranch retailing industry, and Murdoch’s is honored to be taking over the reins from them to continue serving you.
What happened to the previous owner?
Jim and John Linton recognized that after running the stores for several decades, it was time to move on to the next chapter in their lives. Jim Linton will retain ownership and operation of the Jackson, Wyoming location.
Are you keeping all the same employees?
All store team members were offered positions with Murdoch’s. You’ll see a lot of familiar faces.
How do I apply or watch for jobs at Murdoch's?
Search all of our job openings and apply on our website: www.murdochs.com/careers
CUSTOMER CHARGE ACCOUNTS
What happens to my Big R charge account?
Murdoch’s will continue to accept charges on all existing in-house accounts upon receipt of a new Murdoch’s credit application and agreement. There will be a grace period to get the paperwork completed. Accounts that don’t have paperwork in by February 15th will be placed on hold. You will receive a final statement from Big R showing your final balance owed and where to remit payment. If you have questions regarding your in-house account, please call Riverton at (307) 856-9236 or Powell at (307) 754-9521 and ask for the store manager.
Will Murdoch’s offer new charge accounts?
In place of in-house charge accounts, Murdoch’s offers John Deere Financial credit accounts. You can apply for a John Deere Financial credit account online. More information is readily accessible at: www.murdochs.com/financing.
PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
Will you carry the same products that Big R did?
Murdoch’s carries many of the same products or similar ones; not all of Linton’s Big R current inventory will carry over. But we’ll add some new options, too. You’re invited to visit often to check out the goods! If you have a specific concern please be sure to speak with the store manager.
Will Murdoch’s continue to sell firearms?
Murdoch’s will continue to sell firearms in both the Powell and Riverton locations. Unfortunately, we will need to temporarily pause on selling firearms as we apply for our firearms licensing (FFL). As part of the transfer of ownership, Murdoch’s cannot sell firearms in the Powell or Riverton locations until we are approved by the Federal government for our licensing. Unfortunately, that licensing isn’t automatically passed on to Murdoch’s from Big R and there are some training and internal audits we need to complete. We will then apply for the licensing and will be back to selling firearms as soon as we can. Please let our store manager know if you’d like to be contacted when we can resume firearm sales. We appreciate your patience and look forward to serving you.
Will Murdoch’s continue to sell trailers?
The State of Wyoming requires us to have a license to sell trailers. We are working with them as quickly as possible to get the license needed to make sales in Riverton and Powell. Please check in with our store manager if you’d like to be contacted when this is complete, and we are able to sell trailers again. We appreciate your patience and look forward to serving you.
Big R special ordered products for me. Now what do I do?

I have an item on Layaway with Big R. What will happen to it?
Please check in with one of our friendly team members and we will help support the connection with the previous owner to get you reimbursed.
Will Murdoch’s offer a Layaway program?
Murdoch’s will offer a layaway program on firearm purchases.
Will Murdoch’s service power equipment? What happens to my item that was in for repair?
Murdoch’s will continue to service power equipment products that we sell. If you had an item in for repair at the Big R shop that wasn’t complete, we will be shipping those items to our Missoula, Montana service shop to be repaired. Please check in with our store manager if you have any additional questions.

Is there a military discount?
There is! Murdoch’s honors our retired and current members of the military with store-wide discounts in recognition of national holidays. A military ID is all that is necessary to receive the discounts on these select days. Just show it to the cashier during checkout on these holidays: Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. (Minimal exclusions apply.) Details can be found online: www.murdochs.com/news/military-discount/.
Murdoch’s is honored to serve those who have served our country, and we make sure to demonstrate it by contributing to veteran organizations. One of our favorites is:
Warriors & Quiet Waters, a nonprofit that seeks to build resilience and hope with traumatically injured warriors through fly fishing and other mediums. We support Warriors & Quiet Waters by financially underwriting the cost of fly-fishing excursions and therapeutic equine events.
I have a Big R gift card. Can I still use it?
You sure can, as long as it used by July 15th, 2019.
Big R donated to our organization. With whom do I speak regarding that donation?
We love working with community groups, provided they fit into our core guidelines, which are outlined online: www.murdochs.com/about-us/community-involvement/guidelines, and include:
- Assisting kids and families, especially those with a demonstrated need or seeking education on ag-related topics.
- Furthering the good work of 4H and FFA.
- Enhancing lives of pets and their owners, especially through adoption centers and pet-related events.
- Continuing the western tradition of local fairs and rodeos.
You can also submit an inquiry online via our webform, and learn about the four types of giving Murdoch’s likes to participate in:
- Murdoch’s Community Service initiative allows every fulltime employee 8 hours of paid volunteer time each year;
- Hosting events in our stores, like bake sales and car washes;
- Sponsorship of events for organizations that meet our guidelines above; and
- Murdoch’s Employee Giving Program matches cash donations made by our employees up to $250 annually. For more information, visit: www.murdochs.com/community-involvement
Big R was a big 4H and FFA supporter. What will Murdoch’s do for these organizations?
Murdoch’s provides a discount card to all active 4-H members to use towards in-store purchases for project materials and show supplies. Members can get a 4-H card directly from any Murdoch’s store. Murdoch’s also provides financial and in-kind support to 4-H Foundations, Extension Offices and clubs. Each year, students can apply for Murdoch’s College Scholarships through the Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska 4-H Foundations. In addition, each Murdoch’s location proudly hosts fun-filled events, activities and fundraisers. See your local stores for more information on available opportunities.
Ready to Get Involved? Extension offices and clubs may submit an Application for Support for requests of $500 and above for special events, club projects or other programming. Applications are then reviewed & approved through Murdoch’s Home Office. Please visit www.murdochs.com/news/4H/request to complete an Application for Support. Clubs may also request funding below $500 (store product and/or cash) directly from their local store manager; this includes fundraising partnerships such as BBQ’s and Christmas gift wrapping.
Murdoch’s is proud to partner with FFA and support the FFA students who dedicate their time and energy to projects that strengthen their communities, schools, and families. We know how much time, dedication, and hard work goes into every project, and we believe that each and every project makes an impact and plays a vital role in keeping our agricultural communities strong and vibrant.
Murdoch’s is proud to offer a 10% discount on numerous products for your FFA projects. To get a discount card, just let the cashier know that you’re an active FFA member and that you are interested in an FFA Discount Card. The cashier will get you set up!
When you use your discount card, Murdoch’s will allocate funds to your FFA State Foundation. We donate funds every year to Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. We allocate dollars based on the number of times a card is scanned and the transaction totals. Each time you use your FFA Discount Card on a qualifying purchase, you are helping your state earn financial support! While you save, we also give.
We believe that FFA prepares students for higher learning, and Murdoch’s scholarships are intended to help promising students further their education. Scholarships are currently available for all FFA members in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. We are working on creating scholarship opportunities for our Idaho FFA members as well. For more information, or to apply for a Murdoch’s FFA College Scholarship, please see your State FFA Foundation.
