The Redcap (also referred to as the Derbyshire Redcap) originated in the Derbyshire region of England. Redcaps are active foragers which is fitting as they were developed in a region of England known for its craggy, mossy hills. Redcap chickens are known and named for their large and prominent rose comb which looks like a red cap. They are smaller-sized poultry breed. They are alert, quick, and walk with a confident and proud attitude. Females are reddish-brown with black spangles, lay slightly tinted, cream-colored eggs, and are non-setters. Males are reddish-brown with brighter hackle feathers and a lustrous black tail. Redcap day-old baby chicks are a reddish-golden color with black flecks or striping.
